*Energy independence*

With the globalization of the world economy and with the growth of the developing nations, the United States is not the only customer of scarce resources.  Developing nations are now requiring more of the resources that are limited driving our prices up.  The competition of other nations, the reckless proliferation of sub prime loans and the general greed of a nation has driven the value of our dollar down.  With the declining value of our dollar, the cost of our energy needs are increasing.  (See our YTD costs of fossil fuels below.)

As a nation, we need to be concerned about where our energy sources are coming from and we need to be concerned about reducing our energy requirements.  This needs to be a one, two KO punch within the next decade to ensure the country we pass to our children and grandchildren is as great as the country that was passed to us.

For those who think we have time and that the crisis is exaggerated, please think again.  This crisis has been glaring us in the face for over 30 years.  Does anyone remember the Dodge Colt and the Plymouth Champ?  These are long forgotten cars the car manufacturers produced during the 70’s oil and gas crisis that offered fuel economy. However, as the crisis seemed to wane so did the efforts to produce energy saving vehicles.  This time we will not see the same reprieve.  This time we need to act over the long haul.  We are no longer at the start of the crisis, but somewhere between the middle and the end.

What will  and can you do about it?

Vote.  Vote for your elected officials who come to the table with a complete energy independence plan.

Vote with your purchasing dollars for products and companies who are doing the right thing.

Write.  Write your elected officials about your concerns and your expectations.

*Personal Energy Plan*

If everyone made minor adjustments to their lifestyles, we could all reduce our carbon footprint and therefore reduce our energy needs and reduce the negative impact to our country and our planet.  If you are making major purchases, you can reduce sooner by making the right choices.  If you aren’t able to make major changes, you still can make small changes.  Make the right choice today, so that we have the option to make choices in the future.

*Be Green By Christmas*

Start small now and be green by Christmas

· Teach a child to grow up green.

· Never drain the water left in water bottles down the sink. Empty into your potted plants or your garden.  Or keep a watering can close to the sink and empty into the watering can to use later.

· Turn your thermostat up one degree in summer and down one degree in the winter.

· If you are known for your long showers, make one a week under 10 minutes.  Then make it 2.

· Commute to work one day a week.

· Plant a tree.

   *plant a tree*

Fall is the best time to plant a tree as the tree grows its root system during the winter season.  To help green our planet, plant a tree this fall.
